There is a moment in Santorini, just before the sun disappears, when the light changes completely.
The caldera turns softer, the white houses begin to glow, and for a little while, almost everyone stops what they are doing to look.
There are many places on the island to watch the sunset.
But there is something different about watching it from the place where you are staying.
No need to arrive early to find the right spot. No need to plan your evening around it. You can simply sit outside, pour a glass of wine, and wait to see what kind of sunset Santorini has decided to give you that day.
For couples looking for that kind of experience, Imerovigli is difficult to beat.
A Quieter Side of the Caldera
Oia may be the most famous village in Santorini, but Imerovigli offers something slightly different.
It sits high above the caldera, between Fira and Oia, with extraordinary views across the volcano, Thirassia and the Aegean. It is quieter than the island’s busiest villages, particularly once the day visitors begin to leave.
That balance is one of the things that makes it so appealing.
You are not isolated from Santorini. Fira is within walking distance along the caldera path, and restaurants, wine bars and the rest of the island are easily accessible.
But when you come back, you come back to somewhere quieter.
For a couple, that can make a surprising difference.
The Luxury of Not Having to Go Anywhere
One of the nicest things about staying on the caldera is that some of the experiences people travel across Santorini to find are already outside your door.
The view is there when you wake up.
It is there while you have breakfast.
It changes throughout the afternoon.
And in the evening, instead of joining the search for the perfect sunset spot, you can stay exactly where you are.
I have always thought there is a particular kind of luxury in that.
Not the luxury of having more things to do, but of occasionally realising that you don’t need to do anything at all.
Especially when you are travelling together.
Walk Towards Skaros
Skaris Rock is one of the landmarks of Imerovigli and one of the reasons the village feels so distinctive.
The path begins just below the village and leads down towards the enormous rock that rises above the sea. Once the site of a fortified settlement, Skaros is now one of the most memorable walks along this part of the caldera.
You do not necessarily have to make an expedition of it.
Even walking part of the way gives you a different perspective of the cliffs, the village and the sea below.
And yes, it is romantic.
But perhaps not because it looks like a scene from a film.
Simply because it is a beautiful place to walk together, without needing much of a plan.
Mornings Matter Too
Santorini is famous for its sunsets, but I think mornings deserve considerably more attention.
Imerovigli is particularly peaceful early in the day, before the paths become busier and before the summer sun becomes strong.
This is one of my favourite times here.
Coffee outside. Breakfast on the terrace. The volcano in front of you and, for a while, absolutely no reason to hurry.
When people imagine a romantic holiday in Santorini, they often imagine the dramatic moments — the sunset, the champagne, the dinner overlooking the caldera.
Sometimes the quieter ones turn out to be the ones you remember.
Old Houses, Rather Than Hotel Rooms
Part of the character of Santorini comes from its architecture.
Many of the old houses along the caldera were built into or against the volcanic landscape, with thick walls, curved forms and spaces shaped by the island rather than by conventional hotel design.
They were homes long before Santorini became one of the world’s most famous destinations.
That is something we have tried very hard to preserve at Spitia Tzitzi.
Our four houses are different from one another because they were never designed as identical hotel rooms. They are old family houses, restored over time, each with its own layout, details and history.
For me, that individuality is part of their charm — particularly when two people are looking for somewhere that feels private and personal rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
Why Imerovigli Works So Well for Couples
Perhaps the best thing about Imerovigli is that it does not ask you to choose between seeing Santorini and escaping from it.
You can spend the day exploring the island, visit a winery, take a sailing trip, walk into Fira or go to Oia for dinner.
And then you can come home.
Back to the caldera, the quieter paths and your own terrace.
